(Video) The Quickest Warm Up for Everyday Singing (or Speaking!)
I don’t know about you, but I enjoy things that are efficient. And let’s be real — when it comes to singing your favorite song(s), chances are, you probably don’t want to spend a long time warming up your voice. (Ammiright?)
Thankfully, we have a tool to help us warm up our voice quickly — the straw.
Trust me when I say, singing in a straw changes the game. I know it sounds crazy, but straw singing has become a vocal phenomenon that’s transformed voices worldwide! Voice scientist Ingo Titze discovered this amazing technique just in the last 10 years (amazing!). It’s benefits include:
released stress/tension on the vocal cords
faster warm up time
easier phonation (vocal cords coming together to produce sound)
So if you want a warm up that’s quick & efficient, grab a straw + a cup of water, and let’s get started!
Three exercises. Five minutes. That’s all you need!
Sing these simple exercises in the straw to warm up the different registers of your voice. If you have a piano at home, or can accompany yourself and comfortably sing the pitches, the last exercise can be sung chromatically — up and down by half steps. (If you’ve got a piano at home, pick a starting pitch & go up and down from there!)
Pssst…need help singing the right notes? Watch until the end! If you don’t have a piano, I accompany you so you can sing along!
Don’t forget — when you warm up, you sound (& feel!) better! It’s tempting to skip vocal warm ups, so let this be your go-to warm up when you’re limited on time!
