(Video) How to Like Your Own Voice

Have you ever heard yourself sing or speak and thought…

Oh dear god.

Me too, my friend. Even after singing for almost 20 years, I STILL feel this way.

I mean, let’s be real. It’s a bizarre feeling to hear your own voice. Not only in a recording, but even as you’re creating the sound in the moment. The truth is, you and I weren’t designed to hear ourselves as others do. The singer isn’t meant to hear themselves sing. (In fact, a sign that you’re fully ‘letting go’ while you sing is not really hearing what’s actually coming out.)

So, why the judgement? And how can we learn to trust, like…heck, maybe even love the sound of our own voice?

WHAT YOU THINK YOUR VOICE SOUNDS LIKE ISN’T BASED IN FACT.

Let’s look at the human design alone. Since our ears are behind our mouth, and sound travels forward, we’re going to hear our own voice differently when the sound travels back to us. Plain and simple.

And honestly, it’s a little sad! Singers will never be able to get the full experience of what their own voice sounds like. We can feel, hear, and resonate with what happens, but judging what it actually sounds like…that part really isn’t up to us.

If you’ve ever stopped yourself from singing because you didn’t like how it sounds, this video is for you.

And since I’m all about taking action, I leave you with 3 tips that you can start implementing as we speak to help you fall in love with your voice. (Or at least tolerate it enough to not let it distract you from singing!)

When you detach from thoughts of what you think you should sound like and celebrate your voice’s individuality, you’ll experience the real magic of singing.

Let me know how you’ll practice lovin’ on your voice this week! Shoot me a DM on Instagram or leave a comment on YouTube. I read everything and do my very best to respond!

KEEP SINGING!
