A few years back, I heard the phrase “laptop lifestyle” and became obsessed with the concept. You mean to tell me that I could work from anywhere around the world sharing whatever it was that I wanted? Uhh… yes. Sign me up!
I dove headfirst and was overwhelmed by what I discovered. Opt ins, squeeze pages, funnels, up-sells, webinars, group coaching, digital courses — the list goes on, and on. Making money online was like a giant puzzle. And I was determined to put the puzzle pieces together.
It took about year of learning & experimenting. But then, I finally did it —
I made money from a blog post!
It was the summer of 2016 and my husband & I were living & traveling out of our camper van. We had no income, no home, and really no future plan — just our laptops & big ideas...
At the time, I was teaching music teachers how to get private students. Digital marketing was new to me but I knew the only way to figure out how to make money online was by trying it. So I dove in! And let me just say — I had no. freaking. idea what I was doing....
Sure enough, 3 blog posts, 5 emails, and many Instagram posts later, I made my first sale —

Ninety nine freaking dollars!!
I know, I know. That may not seem like a lot.
But coming back to phone service after a long day of hiking in the mountains to see that PayPal statement was a moment I'll never forget. Because the number didn't matter — I discovered that it worked. And that's all I needed to keep going.
Although the high from making money ignited a fire within me, a fire only lasts for so long.
The thing that no one tells you about being a solo-preneur running an online business is that learning as you go can be paralyzing if you let it be.
Because truthfully, it’s all too easy to fall into the many traps — shiny object syndrome, comparison-itis, perfectionism (to name a few) — and let yourself stay there. Seth Godin calls this “the dip,” and as someone who’s been doing this for 5 years, I can vouch for how real it is. This work isn’t easy.

Like all healthy challenges, it’s so freaking worth it.
Yep. That whole “laptop lifestyle” is a real thing, my friend. Even as a voice teacher.
After that $99 sale 5 years ago (and going through my fair share “dips”), I've since made thousands of dollars from my online content — passively in my sleep from work I did months (sometimes years!) ago, and actively from my social media engagement. And I continue to grow & scale my online business working less than I ever have!
Being able to make money online from sharing our knowledge (and scale!) is truly one of the greatest gifts we have. It’s the best & fastest way to experiencing what we truly want out of life — more freedom, more money, all while making a giant impact.
