I KNOW WHAT IT’S LIKE TO FEEL like you’re not SHOWING UP AS your whole self.
When people ask me how I got into the field of music, I chuckle. I've been a musician since before I was started kindergarten.
Both of my parents are musicians & music educators, so I was reading note names by the time I was 5. I began playing the piano at 6, taking classical voice lessons at 12, teaching voice lessons at 19, received 2 degrees in Vocal Arts — including my Master's degree through the top rated music program at USC — and have been singing all styles of music professionally since the 8th grade. To say singing is a part of my life is understatement. It is my life.
But…it isn’t my identity.
And I had to learn this the hard way.
Have you ever had a gut feeling...but didn’t listen?
That’s exactly how I felt during my second semester of my graduate studies. I was on my way to becoming an opera singer and was studying under one of the best voice teachers in the country. And yet, something just wasn’t right.
I realized I was living someone else’s idea of what my life should be.
In the eyes of my support system, I was destined to be a performer. (One of my proudest accomplishments was being recommended as a “world class singer” by my most influential mentor!)
But my body — which always know best — had a different idea.
In the fall of 2013, I was diagnosed with vocal nodules (2 ‘blisters’ on my vocal cords) and suffered a 6 month injury that changed my life. The physical limitations paired with my eventual location departure (starting with a 9 month road trip around the USA in my camper van) gave me the space to tune in to something I’d never paid attention to before…
my inner voice.
A voice that nudged me towards what I desired in my life rather than what I thought I was “supposed” to want.
That gave me permission to let go of feeling guilty or responsible for others.
That gave me clarity on my purpose and what lit my soul on fire.
When I finally responded to what my inner voice was saying, my entire life changed for the better.
I’ve since moved from Southern California to the mountains of Colorado with my husband & dog-child, created the Whole Voice Method (after 10 years of teaching), opened The Whole Voice Studio for local adults & high schoolers, led dozens of workshops & conscious gatherings, coached musicians on how to grow their business, and written & taught several digital courses for aspiring singers + voice teachers all over the world. As for singing, I love writing & sharing my original music and performing with choral ensembles & orchestras that nourish my soul.
